Job Responsibilities of a Medical Coder/Biller
A medical coder's main goal in the big scheme of things is to provide billing services so that the health provider gets paid for medical services rendered. Every medical service is assigned a numeric code to define diagnostics, treatments and procedures. It is the coder's job to enter this information into a database using this set medical protocol to produce a statement or claim. The claim is then sent to the appropriate insurance carrier where it is either accepted or denied. If accepted, the health provider is reimbursed accordingly. If the claim is denied, the medical coder must investigate the rejected claim, verify this information with the health provider, and update the new details into the database. A bill is then sent to the patient. Medical coders are also responsible for dealing with collections and insurance fraud.
Personal Skills and Characteristics
Although proper training in medical coding and terminology is essential to become successful in this field, certain personal attributes will put you well ahead of the competition. Because it is such a competitive and desirable career, you must be driven and self-disciplined; especially if thinking of establishing a home-based business. Being organized is essential since you will be dealing with patient files and documents. So if your idea of a good time involves color-coding your wardrobe on a Saturday night, then being great at this job may come naturally to you. Just as important as organization in this field is attention to detail. Typos and inaccuracies can happen easily when using medical coding as a means of communication. When dealing with medical files however, there is no room for error. It can disrupt the whole billing process. Working primarily with files and computers doesn't mean that people skills aren't important. Proper phone etiquette is necessary since phone conversations with patients and insurance carriers will be frequent. Working with private documents also means that you must be able to practice anonymity during and outside the workplace.
