Our Son Cheyne
Hi, my name’s Cheyne and I’d like to tell you about my journey through life with Cerebral Palsy. I was initially diagnosed with Spastic Quadriparesis CP, at 18 months of age. The diagnosis of spastic quadriparesis means that at birth, both arms and legs were affected through brain damage. I have gone from learning to crawl, to sitting up. In elementary school, I used a wheelchair to get around at first. By the 3rd grade I was walking in a walker and by the 6th grade, I started practicing walking with canes. With the additional help I received when I began an Intensive Therapy program in 2001, I made significant progress over the span of one week! After several visits to other Intensive Therapy clinics, mom decided to open her own clinic, Ability Plus Therapy. The clinic has not only helped Mattthew and I, but many other children from around the world have achieved great things through the treatment. Of course, no single treatment will work on its own, subsequent work and determination are needed from the child as well as their parents in order to achieve the desired result. Over the many years of my life I have gone through surgeries with the best doctors in the country and the best rehabilitation to make me strong and understand how my body works. I am now re-diagnosed as a diaplegic, meaning that only the lower extremities are affected. My goal is in the next year to walk without the walking stick I am currently working with and take independent steps. I have made significant strides in other areas of life, as well. For example, I graduated high school with honors and I am a full-time college student. Over the past few years, I have taught myself to play the guitar and piano. I am working toward a goal of being able to drive with the assistance of hand controls.
Looking back over my life, the support and dedication of my family and friends, as well as my own determination has spurred me on to a better quality of life; although, hard work and willpower are only parts of the equation that work towards physical rehabilitation and an improved quality of life.
